Working with Google, the Surface Duo will be able to launch applications from the Google Play Store.

Microsoft has been trying to make mobile phone operating systems for more than two decades, but it gave up two years ago. It could not compete with the popularity of Google's Android and Apple iOS, which will make up 87% and 13% of the world's smartphones this year, respectively, IDC reports. Instead, Microsoft has decided to extend its Office software and other services to competing devices, including the iPhone. The first Android phone takes this further.
