The “Hollywood Access” segment, filmed when Trump tried to vote in the 2004 election, shows that Trump and TV presenter Billy Bush visit several polling stations in New York. However, Trump is banned from voting at every place because he is not on any voter list at every stop.
Trump can be seen becoming increasingly frustrated before saying, “I’m going to fill out an absentee ballot.”
This segment ends with Trump filling in what Bush describes as a preliminary vote in his car.
“I just voted,” Trump advertised. “At least you can tell the Trumpeter doesn’t give up.”
The 16-year-old video spread on social media and gained new attention after prolonged attacks by the president on the mail by mail.
The attacks, which often take on a guerrilla toll as the president says he believes his party will be affected by a postal vote, intensified on Thursday before Trump swam past the election, something he can̵
7;t do legally.
“Universal voting by mail (rather than absentee voting, which is good), 2020 will be the LONGEST and CORRECT election in history. It will be a great embarrassment for the United States,” Trump tweeted on Thursday. “Delay the election until people can vote correctly, reliably and safely ???”
During a press conference later that day, Trump was asked to explain his motivations. He initially suggested trying to avoid a counting process that could take days or weeks if a large number of voters cast their ballots in the mail. But he eventually acknowledged that his allegations could cast doubt on what the outcome would be in November.
“What people are looking at now is … are all these stories true that these elections will be fake, they will be corrected, rigged,” he said.
“Everyone is looking at it,” Trump added. “A lot of people say it’s probably going to happen.”
In fact, there is no evidence that mail voting leads to fraud. Although there are rare cases of voter fraud with ballots sent by mail, this is far from a common problem in the American electoral system. The latest example of mail ballot fraud occurred in the 2018 by-elections in a race in which a North Carolina GOP activist was charged with numerous crimes in connection with a questionable congressional absentee polling station on behalf of a Republican candidate.
Mail fraud is, in part, extremely rare, as states have systems and processes in place to prevent voter fraud, theft and fraud. These systems will apply to both absentee ballots and postal ballots for state voters.
In addition, the difference between the President’s mail and absentee voting surprises experts, who say that these voting systems are the same.
“Voting without acquittal by mail or absentee voting – whatever you call it – is essentially the same thing,” David Becker, founder of the non-partisan Center for Innovation and Research at the election, told CNN earlier. “You demand a ballot, you get a ballot, you vote, you send it, and there’s a defense. It doesn’t matter if you call it a postal or absentee ballot. It’s the same thing.”
