The 140-foot painting is near a building in downtown Spokane, Washington – partly sponsored by Terrain, a local art commercial organization. Terrain, along with digital advertising agencies 14Four and Seven2, have hired 16 artists to decorate and paint each letter in Black Lives Matter, according to CNN KXLY.
To some, however, it was offensive. The mural, completed less than two weeks ago, was vandalized on Wednesday.
But the community does not allow a negative response to prevent this. Fundraising to restore the mural has already raised more than $ 10,000.
“It took dozens of people who worked with love for this project to happen, and only one or two are full of hatred to persuade him,”
; Terrin said in a message posted on Facebook. “We surpass them, but we cannot be motionless or silent.”
The artist Mykola Syronka designed and painted fresco “A” in “Black”, a letter that was heavily influenced by white paint. He is not surprised that the mural was scandalized, he told CNN.
“I just feel that all Black Living Matter now makes more sense to me, a unity of purpose. All are united in one goal, and that eradicates inequality and injustice, and all that is put together,” he said.
Chianta Duncan, vice president of Spokane NAACP, said she had a visceral reaction to viewing the photos.
“It’s extremely scary,” Duncan told the local KHQ news station. “When the words ‘Black Living Matter’ are enough to upset people in the city so much that they not only protest against it, but also destroy the very words on the side of the building.”
Sergey. Terry Preninger, Spokane Police spokesman, told the local office. A spokesman for the department said the department was aware of the vandalism through the media, but did not confirm whether a formal complaint had been filed.
This is not the only BLM mural that has been installed in recent weeks. In Spokane, George Floyd’s mural was whitewashed, although it has now been restored.
In Manhattan, the Black Lives Matter street mural outside the Trump Tower was installed four times, despite the fact that it ended on July 9.
