LAS VEGAS – Absorption complete.
Teofimo Lopez ended his rocket trip to the top of the lightweight boxing with a sharp unanimous decision regarding Vasyl Lomachenko, which made him the undisputed champion.
Lopez now holds the WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF lightweight titles, becoming only the fifth man in the four-belt era to become the undisputed champion. Others include Bernard Hopkins, Jermaine Taylor, Terence Crawford and Alexander Usyk.
Julie Lederman was almost incomprehensible to Lopez 119-109. Judge Tim Cheat received 116-112, the same as Yahoo Sports, and Steve Weisfeld preferred Lopez 117-111, while Julie Lederman hardly understood Lopez 119-109.
“Julie Lederman, what a fight she watched,” said promoter Bob Arum. “These judges are the craziest. … Lopez won the fight, however [Lomachenko] won four of those rounds in the back. “
Lomachenko’s strategy was at least confusing. In the first half of the fight, he struck very few blows and allowed Lopez to win by moving forward and throwing punches and a random right hand.
Lomachenko picked it up in the second half of the fight, but he fell behind. He clearly returned, but her wide score outraged many.
“I would advise any fighter who would have to ask the commission not to appoint her,” Arum said.
Lopez’s strike force also seemed to be a factor. Although there were no knockdowns, Lomachenko had trouble competing with the rigid rights to which Lopez landed. In the 12th round, apparently, the fight could have been a balance, Lopez received three or four bristle rights, which stopped Lomachenko on his way.
Lopez received an unpleasant cut in his left eye after suffering a late head injury. Lomachenko lowered his head sharply, and was repeatedly warned by Judge Russell Mora.
The loss was Lomachenko’s second as a professional and third in his career, after an amateur career of 396-1, which included two Olympic gold medals. Now he is 14-2 as a professional.
Lopez, who won the 2016 Olympic Games in the United States but did not make up the team, represented Honduras and was eliminated in the first round in Rio de Janeiro. But he was a novice star as a professional, and on Saturday finally reached the top of the mountain.
