At the heart of the gloomy reaction to the US coronavirus, a threatening relationship with masks
The mask is the simplest and most effective weapon against coronavirus in the arsenal of health care. But from the beginning, America’s relationship with face coatings has been deeply threatened.
Improper governance, cultural aversion to masks, and deeply polarized policies have contributed to this. So there is a president who has resisted a role that simulates the benefits of face coatings, and who has humiliated those who have done so.
The result, according to experts, is a country that has lost one of the best opportunities to overcome the coronavirus pandemic this spring and summer. In doing so, the United States has lagged far behind other countries, which have missed the fuss over masks, costing lives and jeopardizing the fall that is moving to fall.
