Last year, Google set a significant precedent for its Pixel phones, extending the third major update, Android 10, to the original Pixel and Pixel XL. Today we confirmed that Android 11 will be the latest update for Pixel 2.
Initially, Google only promised that their Pixel phones would receive two major updates, ie the original Pixel phones were to expire on Android Pie. Last year, “in popular demand,” Google expanded the Pixel and Pixel XL to Android 10 to breathe the last slice of life into 2016 phones.
Also this year, Pixel 2 is included as one of the devices compatible with Android 11 Beta, and owners of Pixel 2 will receive a full update of Android 11 when it launches later this year. Unlike the first Pixel series, Pixel 2 continues to promise three major upgrades. This means that the release of Android 11 later this year, Google’s promises will be fulfilled.
We now believe that the Android 11 update will be the third and final major update to the Pixel 2, but no extended support is planned, according to a comment from the developer of the Android Open Source project. In a comment that also includes our first mention of pixel 5a 2021 in 2021, the Google developer explicitly states that they are “in the process of giving up support for pixel 2.”
However, owners of the Pixel 2/2 XL can probably expect a similar experience as the original Pixel and Pixel XL, only after one or two final security updates after the launch of Android 11, before finally giving up by the end of the year.
In the same comment, the developer includes a list of almost every Pixel device, both released and unreleased, and the version of Android that he launched – or to start – з. From the list, we learn that the Pixel 4a will actually run with Android 10, not Android 11, as some had hoped.
Based on this, we believe that the Pixel 4a will receive an update by August 2023, which means that it may reach the end of support in a few months, when we usually expect the launch of Android 2020 2023. However, it’s too early to think in detail about Google’s update schedule for your mid-range devices.
If the Google Pixel 2020 line looks a bit unbearable or confusing, our Stephen Hall has broken down and simplified what to expect from each of the next three phones and for whom they are designed, which can also serve as a fantastic speculative buying guide for Pixel 2 owners coming soon. resignation.
Pixel 2 owners, do you plan to switch to another Pixel phone or switch to another brand this year? Let us know in the comments.
