Detroit Life Lives security Keron Kirs has suspended three NFL games for drug abuse violations.
The 26-year-old Kirs signed with the Lions in March after four seasons in Minnesota, where he played in 62 games with five starts, making 79 games and defending eight passes.
Kirse was accused of DWI and carried a firearm without permission last October when he was with the Vikings. Kirse apologized for his actions back in October, saying the arrest was “not a reflection of who I am.”
The NFL did not say whether the stop was linked to the October arrest.
“We knew about the situation in the free agency, we clearly checked the situation. We talked to Jeron and felt comfortable with him and the situation,”; said Lions coach Matt Patricia. “Obviously, [we] I met him much more after the free agency and just felt comfortable with it all. We knew it was something that was coming. … It’s a league issue and I’ll leave it at that.
“But that’s what we knew during the free agency.”
Kirs has the right to return on September 28 after the team’s game in Arizona.
Detroit is overwhelmed by the security behind incumbent Tracy Walker and Will Harris after the offseason, including the re-signing of Miles Killer, the signing of Kirse and the Duron Harmon trade.
