Mac OS 8 is now an application that can be downloaded and installed on macOS, Windows and Linux

Weak developer Felix Rieseberg has turned Mac OS 8 into an application that can be installed on a Mac or PC. After turning Windows 95 into an app back in 2018, Rieseberg decided to turn the entire 1991 Macintosh Quadra from Mac OS 8.1 into a single Electron app. It even includes a number of applications and games, thanks to the old 1997 MacWorld demo. The application can be installed on macOS, Windows and Linux.

The macintosh.js application is written entirely in JavaScript, and it uses a virtual machine to simulate the Macintosh Quadra 900 with Apple’s Motorola processor, which was used before the transition to IBM PowerPC chips. Rieseberg managed to get classic games like Duke Nukem 3D,, Civilization II,, Dungeons and Dragons,, Namely,, Oregon Trail,, Alley 1

9 Bowling, and Damage included run. There are even a bunch of applications and tests that are pre-installed, including Photoshop 3, Premiere 4, Illustrator 5.5, StuffIt Expander, and the Apple Web Design Construction Kit.

Although Internet Explorer and Netscape are pre-installed, the versions are so old that Rieseberg says “you couldn’t even open Google.” One way or another, it’s impressive that the Mac OS 90’s version has been ported to JavaScript.

If you are interested in trying the program, all offline versions have less than 250 MB and can be downloaded from GitHub. Enjoy once again a trip down the memory strip.
