JetBlue uses an ultraviolet cleaning robot at JFK airport to fight coronavirus – NBC New York

It is a device similar to a mixture between a basket of drinks and a robot, but it is designed to help continue the fight against the coronavirus.

On Wednesday, JetBlue became the first airline in the country to use the latest ultraviolet technology in its cleaning efforts as a means of combating the coronavirus.

JFK Airport in New York, as well as Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport in Florida, have been selected to pilot a new UV surface treatment system for JetBlue aircraft interiors.

7;s new ultraviolet cabin system is used as part of the JetBlue Airways pilot, marking the first time the US airline has introduced the technology. The robotic system can travel through the cockpit in less than 10 minutes.

The Honeywell Ultraviolet Cabin System is the size of an aircraft beverage basket and is lightly equipped with ultraviolet light that extends over the top of the seats and sweeps the cabin to treat the aircraft’s surfaces.

JetBlue will use the system while continuing other cleaning methods. Clinical studies have shown that ultraviolet light can significantly reduce certain viruses and bacteria, including SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV, when used properly at certain levels.

“The safety of our crew and customers is our top priority. The safety of JetBlue is, first and foremost, supporting a multi-layered approach to safety by providing healthy crew members, providing flexibility, adding space, reducing points of contact and keeping surfaces clean and sanitary.” said Joanna Jerafi, president of JetBlue and chief maintenance officer. “Because we want to add extra layers of protection using advanced technology, we’ve identified the Honeywell UV cab system as a potential game changer when it comes to effectively assisting in our onboard surface cleaning efforts.”

Honeywell delivered eight devices to JetBlue in the airline’s two central cities, John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport. These two locations launched a 90-day pilot program.

“JetBlue immediately became interested in this new product when we demonstrated it to them just a few weeks ago, and now JetBlue is getting our first systems,” said Mike Madsen, President and CEO of Honeywell Aerospace. “We have rapidly increased production in the UV cabin system, and our company is working on a number of solutions to help passengers become more comfortable in flight.”
