In his brief resignation letter, James Murdoch said he was leaving the company because of “disagreements over certain editorial content published” in its news outlets and “certain other strategic decisions.”
A spokesman for James Murdoch said there would be no immediate further comment and that the letter spoke for itself.
In a joint statement, Rupert Murdoch and Lachlan Murdoch said: “We are grateful to James for his many years of service to the company. We wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
James Murdoch, whose older brother Lachlan Murdoch is the head of Fox Corporation, has already left part of the media empire because of his disgust for Fox News. Murdoch Jr. also previously disagreed with his father̵7;s conservative political views.
But he stayed aboard the News Corp. – something that intrigued family friends. His resignation on Friday from News Corp. is the growing distance between his brother’s and father’s media business.
He no longer serves on the boards of family companies, but he is still linked to the empire through the Murdoch Family Trust, which holds key voting shares in both companies.
The News Corp umbrella includes documents such as The Wall Street Journal and the New York Post. This also includes the publisher of the book HarperCollins.
News Corp. also owns much of the Australian media, which has been criticized earlier this year for covering climate change as it relates to recent forest fires that have swept across the country.
James Murdoch’s spokesman said that in January he and his wife Catherine Murdoch had “well-formed” views on climate change and were “particularly disappointed by the constant denial among the news in Australia, giving clear evidence to the contrary.”
This is an evolving story …
