Sandra Rivera, who oversees the Intel chip, said on a media event in Palo Alto, California that a 5G modem chipset will ship to customers this year, but Intel does not expect consumer "products on the market" until 2020
] Intel has said that the 5G modem chip will be available later this year, but it never pointed out when it believes products will come to consumers. Rivera said non-consumer 5G products, such as a network of accessories, will appear later this year.
It is unclear whether Intel's term on modem chips means that Apple will not have an iPhone with 5G capabilities in 2019. Bloomberg has previously reported that Apple will not have iPhone 5G ready by 2020.
Apple executives have spoken with Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and MediaTek Inc. over 5G modem chips for iPhone will be released this year, but the outcome of these talks is unknown.
Reuters reported on Feb. 7 that Apple earlier this year had migrated its modem engineering efforts to the same unit that makes its branded processor chips.
Apple did not immediately respond to a comment request.
