Earlier this week, Donald Trump, commander-in-chief of the United States Armed Forces, tweeted that his impeachment would "cause a civil war" after which the country could never recover. Speaking to the evangelical pastor at Fox News, Trump did not simply say that his removal would result in a massive electoral defeat for Democrats or even mass demonstrations. He said it was a "civil war". Americans took up arms against other Americans in his name.
"Civil War 2" began appearing on Twitter. Yes, #CivilWarSignup did for a while.
In the modern era, real civil wars have been a major oppression of third world countries ̵
After spending 19 years in Washington with intelligence work in Congress, the FBI, and the Department of Homeland Security (focusing on counterterrorism and counterintelligence), I had the opportunity to join the Red Command commander at US Central Command in Tampa, Florida.
However, for several years the senior management of CENTCOM told us that an "alternative analysis of the Red Team had confused" the commander. (True, they did not really want any competing analysis to contradict what traditional intelligence analysts were selling.) I was told that I would now be an Intelligence Planner. Intelligence planners provide critical intelligence support for military operations. (Centcom is responsible for much of the Middle East, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the fight against IDIS.) I stayed at Centcom for 12 years.
Our Republic relies on the important constitutional principle of civilian control over it. -political military. But the constant blow to right-wing conspiracy theories and hated political rhetoric found their way into much of the US military's ranks. Not too long ago, most servicemen in the Army would identify themselves as Reagan Republicans. But just as this brand of republicanism was replaced by corporatism among civilian Republicans, so did it penetrate the armed forces, and by these standards, even Ronald Reagan would be considered a socialist.
" Donald Trump is all the American military has to despise: a supporter, an adulterer, a lazy, lazy, unread, tabloid joke for decades, and a reality TV star. "
] Recent polls show that among military veterans, Trump's approval rating is higher than that of civilians. In my experience, supporting Donald Trump among a large segment of the US military is quite a cult character.
Nothing makes sense. Trump is all the US military has to despise: a supporter, an adulterer, a cheeky, lazy, unread, tabloid joke for decades, and a reality TV star. During the 2016 campaign, Trump tried to crack down on his non-existent national security footprints by offending Generals Barack Obama. “I know more about IDIS than generals. Generals were reduced to rubble. They were reduced to what was embarrassing for our country. "He hinted that as president, he would release them." They are likely to be different generals, "he told a NBC Chief Electoral Forum.
a public figure of immoral and unethical behavior, who has never served in the military or engaged in any public service in his country, tweeted underage insults at retired four-star generals such as Colin Powell, John Allen, Stanley McCrystal, Michael Hacken, Michael Hacken Several of these generalized, battle-hardened generals were lifelong Republicans who dedicated their lives to serving their country, yet they believed so strongly that Trump threatened national security, and they took the extraordinary step of breaking the military tradition to criticize him. 19659002] In ordinary times, it would have taken a serious blow to any campaign and created a serious tooth of support among the military, but the attacks by the generals and Trump's willingness to return fire only led him to the rank.
These generals knew Hillary Clinton personally for years. They worked with Hillary Clinton as a senator and secretary of state, admiring her seriousness and intelligence. After Trump secured the Republican nomination, their panic led to a vague attempt to assist her in the nomination, criticizing Trump's Trump approach to national security. This was frankly reflected and only increased Trump's support among troops.
And then the Michael Flynn case happened. After a lengthy military career, Flynn's anger and bitterness led him to star on Donald Trump. That would be his abolition. General three-star General Flynn has been found guilty of lying to the FBI and is awaiting sentencing. His flagship "Lock her up" scandal at the Republican National Convention should have disgusted anyone who has ever served in uniform. It did not happen.
This reputational massacre of high-profile US military leaders associated with Trump continued as H. McMaster, John Kelly, and James Mattis sought to approximate Trump's policies. Instead, they succumbed to his hysteria and humiliation and eventually left the administration. He has never had the decades of military and national security experience so misused and abused by the US president.
" From Michael Flynn, the retired general closest to him, Trump learned how deep the contempt of the military was toward the Democrats. "
Despite all this, Trump's dedication to a large segment of the military was unwavering. . Hearing the military, including Vietnam veterans, attack Trump's parrot on John McCain, who spent five painful years as a prisoner of war in Hanoi Hilton, was shocking and unsettling. It was the general, not the generals, that Trump evaded with his calls for military parades.
Closest to him Michael Flynn, a retired retired general, has learned how deep the military's contempt for the Democrats is – both for Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama specifically. Trump learned from Flynn that there were complaints and insults at the military facility to be operated. At CENTCOM, you can hear high-minded retired military men and retired military officers with outstanding service records (not "lamentable") repeating far-right conspiracy theories such as "Hillary kills many people" and "Obama is a Kenyan black Muslim" The FBI and the CIA are corrupt, "" The media is fake news. "Trump's attacks and abuse of former bosses, as well as the Golden Star family, did not seem to affect their opinion of him.
Once Trump was elected, they wholeheartedly claimed to be a "deep state" and the "fake news media" are now preparing for a coup against him. Some would call themselves "nationalists" without a basic understanding of the difference between "nationalism" and "patriotism." (A political split also cuts across racial lines. African-Americans, serving in the military had a deep admiration for, and commitment to, the first black commander, not shared by their white counterparts. One army major, a veteran of the Iraq war, voiced many other military men, saying to me, "The military hates Obama."
" It was the cruelty that Trump went after after Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama who made him a hero. "
The CENTCOM environment, and especially the United Intelligence Center (JIC). which houses all Intelligence Intelligence (DIA) analysts felt political the moment you walked through its doors, televisions in the lobby, in the lounges, in private office space and even in the cafeteria for employees and visitors were tuned in to FOX News It was Orwellian in its ubiquity tables were broadcasting FOX news while reading Drewdge and Breitbart. (By 2018, sports or weather channels began to show up in most common areas to move away from politics, which made some inconvenience.)
Trump went after Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, who made him his hero, the FBI could no longer be trusted after releasing the Hillary Curve, so everything the FBI and the CIA found about Russia's interference in the 2016 election did not automatically lack confidence. Nothing was believed.
This was especially disturbing to intelligence analysts who parroted the images of Trump by former leaders of the intelligence community who sounded alarmed at the Trump campaign's contacts with the Russians. A very senior NSA intelligence officer said he confirmed that the hacking of the Hillary Clinton emails was an "inside job" and not really WikiLeaks and the Russians. It was difficult to understand why these military intelligence experts felt compelled to so vigorously downplay the estimates of the rest of the intelligence community, particularly when it concerns Trump – as well as the cruelty with which they personally defended him.
In his private time, many trolls watched. "You saw it! Hillary has Parkinson's disease!" Were our military intelligence analysts a victim of the same Russian campaign of influence that affected so many civilians? Like the scene from Manchu Candidate if you criticized Trump, they responded. " Hillary "did it, or Obama did it. It was almost as if they were programmed.
" Nothing stuck in the bypass of analysts and planners at CENTCOM more than the Iran nuclear deal. "
Trump's parrot has taken other alarming turns. One also heard in casual conversations with analysts at CENTCOM who make derogatory remarks against Western coalition partners – Canadians, Britons, French, Germans – and NATO" The relief was that Obama left, Hillary lost, and a "new sheriff" appeared in the city.
The Gulf states could not believe their luck – especially the Saudis. No one was concerned about human rights anymore. They will receive the military assistance they have
Israelis have sincerely rejoiced at Trump's election, even in the face of media outrage over the death of journalist Jamal Hashoggi at the hands of Saudi Arabia's Awaliwali Arabavik : "He wasn't even an American citizen," coming up with what he had just heard Trump say about FOX News – as if it should have done.
At the operational level (not entirely without respect), Obama's criticism was that he was a manager who was from Ir aku created ISIL, as did his last-minute refusal to follow Bashar al-Assad in Syria. But CENTCOM's analysts and planners are stuck with nothing more than Iran's nuclear deal – the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). It is this deal that they believe prevents the United States from giving Iran the long overdue bloody nose it deserved.
Although the civilian security agency believed that the JCPOA had pushed Iran back from the nuclear weapons capability that would lead to a regional nuclear arms race, the military considered it an unjustified surrender of a major proponent of hostilities and terrorism in the region. Most retired and retired military personnel at CENTCOM were serving in Iraq at some point where, according to the Pentagon, Iranian militia backing Iran killed 600 US soldiers. They did not forget and did not forgive.
" The gulf between the civilian world and the military has been growing since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan – wars affecting more American families than at any time after Vietnam. "
Cold war, intelligence analysts spent their entire careers planning a war with the Soviet Union, which fortunately never came. Many of CENTCOM spent their careers doing the same thing with Iran. The military planners realized that there were no good military options when it came to the war with Iran. But the nuclear deal has given Iran over $ 100 billion in hard money. The consequence was that the Iranian regime would use not to improve the lives of its people, but to increase funding for Shiite militias and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which were now operating in close proximity to US soldiers in the fight against ISIL. (Time has proved this argument for the most part. But it is also true that the JCPOA provided protection for US troops against Shiite militias and IRGC forces fighting near US troops in the fight against IDIS.) CENTCOM considered Trump's willingness to unilaterally unite the United States. like nothing but heroic.
The gulf between the civilian world and the military has been growing since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan – wars that have affected more American families than any time since Vietnam. Vietnam has created a huge cultural divide in the US, which Richard Nixon successfully exploited, earning him one of the greatest election victories in American history. But something more sinister may be ahead as we approach the 2020 election. Trump did what Nixon ultimately couldn't do. He has so far avoided real accountability to Congress. He has successfully blurred the line between lying and truth in the minds of the American public. It undermined institutions that maintained US security after World War II.
The degree of visceral hatred felt by much of the military towards Democrats, the "deep state" and "fake news" is a new phenomenon. The belief that a coup is really going against President Trump is a weapon that Trump has in his arsenal, depending on how far down to authoritarianism he decides to go. But Trump needs to first break down the military deeply, and that is something to watch for. Most members of the military are honorable, patriotic Americans who would never have participated in such a scheme despite their support for Trump. But much of it just can.
