While ordering the iPhone 12, I noticed a strange announcement that I needed to change my Verizon plan to be able to use 5G. This is despite the fact that I had, in my opinion, the last unlimited plan of the carrier. Follow the instructions on how to make sure you have a Verizon 5G plan and what to look for.
TL; DR: Even if you think you have a current unlimited tariff plan with Verizon that includes 5G, you may need to upgrade your plan, which is not more expensive at face value, but may include various “benefits.” These benefits can save you money or cost you more when you change your plan. Read all the details.
As part of ordering an iPhone with Verizon, I received the following notification:
Your device is ready to use 5G Ultra Wideband, but your plan is not. To take full advantage of 5G UW, go for a plan that includes this service. If you follow the current plan, you will still have access to 4G LTE and 5G across the country, but you will lose this updated service.
There was an option to update my plan, but that turned me down because I think we have a current unlimited plan with Verizon (Do More Unlimited). So I decided to take a break and do some research before changing plans.
Here̵7;s what I found on the Verizon website for details on the plan:
I found this strange because our current plan is Do More Unlimited, and the Verizon website has shown that it includes premium 5G / 4G LTE data (up to 50 GB per month). I checked again and yes, we have Do More Unlimited. So what about the warning?
How to Get a Verizon 5G Plan
I called Verizon and talked to a nice and knowledgeable representative. Interestingly, although the plans for 2019 are named the same as the plans for 2020 (shown above), there are plans for the previous and new generation that do not include and do not include 5G.
Prices haven’t changed, but what has changed in addition to the fact that 5G is included in the latest generation of Verizon Wireless unlimited plans is the included benefits (which can actually change the price, for example, if you have an Apple Watch your plan).
When you go to change plans yourself, you will see them differentiated and added at the end of “5G UW”, which makes things clear. Last generation plans are not more expensive, but bonuses can change the total cost. Another important note: each line can have a different unlimited plan.
The spokesman I spoke to did not say that my plan would automatically upgrade to the 5G plan when activating the iPhone 12 with Verizon (I ended up buying my iPhone 12 directly through Apple, not through Verizon installed to activate with existing Verizon). number).
Here’s how new bonuses accumulate for the latest version of Play More, Do More and getting unlimited plans from Verizon:
When changing your plan, pay attention to the benefits that are available now compared to last year or earlier (or when you last changed plans). For example, if you want to include Disney +, Hulu, ESPN, you need to play more or get more now.
But if you want a 50% discount on an unlimited number of connected devices, like on an Apple Watch mobile, you need to do more or get more.
Only the Get More plan includes both of these benefits and Apple Music. In short, although the new 5G plans are not more expensive, depending on the benefits you want compared to the unlimited plans of the previous generation, you can see how your account goes up or down a bit.
