Pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) is the name for transmitting 2 bits of data over a connection instead of 1 bit. This is a technical concept, but in essence, it allows the system to call from 4 potential states instead of 2 with each burst of information. Thanks to PAM4, Micron and Nvidia promise a significant increase in data rate and bandwidth. GDDR6X is also more energy efficient. At 21Gbps, GDDR6X uses 15% less power per bit than GDDR6 at 14 Gbps.
Micron claims that the GDDR6X data rate of 21 Gbps, when you combine all these pins and memory modules into something like the RTX 3090, the total GPU bandwidth is 936 GB / s. It’s massive. For comparison, the memory capacity of the Xbox Series X reaches 560 GB / s, and the PS5 – 448 GB / s.
Simply put, this means that the GPU can instantly extract huge amounts of data from its memory. And this will lead to better games.
