Northamptonshire, United Kingdom – The wife of an American diplomat based in Britain is accused of using diplomatic immunity to escape justice. She was suspected of a deadly road accident and fled the country.
Charlotte Charles and Tim Dunn said they lost more than a child when Harry Dunn hit his car while riding a motorcycle. They say they had no chance of grieving after their 19-year-old son was pronounced dead at the hospital.
"We have so much going on," Charles said in tears.
A 42-year-old driver who encountered Harry Dunn is believed to be the wife of an American diplomat. Investigators say she had just left the Royal Air Force – the British media described her as a US spy base – and was traveling on the other side of the road when she crashed into Dunne. A few days later, she returned to the United States with diplomatic immunity.
"We want to bring her back. We want to bring her back. We want to admit that she is respected," Charles said.
US Embassy spokesman told CBS News that such requests are taken seriously, but added: "Given the global impact of such decisions, immunity is seldom denied."
"It's just about showing us that she is human, not … inhuman," Charles
Dunn's parents will meet with British Foreign Minister Dominic Raab this week, but the country's top diplomat will have to pass a clear line, balancing international agreements with the country's most important ally and the grief-stricken needs of the family. © 2019 CBS Interactive Inc.
