Disneyland staff and fans hold rallies near the theme park to protest the months-long closure

ANAHEIM, Calif., (KABC) – Fans, staff and others gathered around Disneyland on Saturday morning in hopes of pushing government officials to open a theme park that has been closed since March 14 due to COVID-19
pandemic.

The rally comes weeks after Disney announced it would lay off 28,000 employees, in part because of the reluctance of Governor Gavin Newson and other government officials to lift restrictions that would allow the park and others in the state to reopen.

“We want Disneyland to reopen. I’m one of the 28,000 cast members who have been fired now since March,” said one employee. “If Disneyland is open all over the world, why can’t Disneyland in Anaheim not be open? I think the governor should give us a chance to open, and they keep asking, but he keeps pushing the bar further.”

Although Disneyland and Disney California remain closed, the Disney Center is open for business.

Newsom said he was taking a cautious approach to California’s economic recovery after previous efforts led to a significant surge in coronavirus cases that lasted for weeks and led to many open companies having to close a second time.
