Diary of Tesla Model Y: The first day, renting a Model X



Over the next week or so, I will be documenting my experience buying a Tesla Model Y along with first impressions of the car.

The end of my three-year Model X lease in 2017 would be August 11, and I was trying to put the delivery time of the Model Y as close as possible. However, Tesla said that my Model Y would arrive on July 19, and if I did not pick it up then (or within a three-day window), I would have to jump in the back and wait until September or later. I agreed to take delivery on Sunday, June 19th.

Tesla called me on the 17th to say that my Model Y was a week late …

So I had to keep the Model X for another week. Normally, it would be a lot of fun, but our Model X has had a lot of problems in recent years, but even from the beginning.

Problems Tesla Model X

Of the three (now four) Teslas I owned, the Model X had the worst reliability, and that hardened a lot of the excitement that comes along with having one of the most perfect cars on the road.

I must say that we intended to rent a new finish of the base model 75D, model X. But when we placed our order, the seller told us about the 90-inch car with AP, 22-inch turbine wheels, premium sound and more. about 3,000 miles on it became available. Since the rent would have been less and he was allegedly at the mint, we jumped on it.

Unfortunately, shortly after returning home, the rear axle would begin to tremble loudly as it drove through left turns. We took him to the store, and Tesla allegedly corrected.

No, they took him back to the store and they said there was nothing wrong. I forced the officer to get in the car with me and drive around the block. Tesla decided it needed repairs that took weeks. A few weeks later, the Model X came back to me. I tested it around the unit, and it seemed great.

But then on the way home she started making that sound again. So I decided to just live with it for three years.

Otherwise, the Model X was a pretty solid car. But I have other hobbies:

  • The range never reached the stated 256 miles. Part of this is that I’ve found that 22-inch turbine wheels will reduce high mileage. Even the snow tires on the set of 20-inch standard wheels got better mileage.
  • Sometimes the door or trunk of the Falcon Wing closes unexpectedly or opens unexpectedly without requiring. It got so bad that the sound of the door closed sounds that Tesla is forcing my family to invent like some kind of PTSD. We would joke that between Autopilot jerks and the door, Tesla was trying to kill us.
  • The third row seat lift button is difficult to find and activate. I believe that Tesla has fixed this in the following models.
  • Dropping the kids was too big a flex show with that door. I would really like the low profile option.

My wife absolutely loved the car, even with the aforementioned “flaws”. And, frankly, I did too. We took him from New York to Florida and made it as far west as Ohio, with very little hassle. The main long-distance trip in our vehicles is three hours north to Vermont – about 180 miles – all winter before snowboarding. We also spend summer trips there.

We were never able to make the 180-mile trip with our Model X in the winter. We’ve done this several times in the summer, but it requires taming the ride and arriving on the electronic equivalent of smoke.

And one last thing: about a month ago, our Model X home screen went dark. We tried all the tricks to return it, but to no avail. Tesla said we would have to bring him in to fix it, but he had no access until the end of the lease – about a month. I thought it was pretty crazy because it’s an integral part of driving. Turn signals do not work, temperature controls and music are missing. It was basically like my first car.

Model Y ‘Update’

Setting the Model X behind me makes the Model Y exciting. I know from experience that the Model 3 can easily get 300 miles of real range, so I’m sure the Model Y will be able to do it non-stop in the winter. This week we’re even going there with a bike rack that really needs to check the range. And of course, thanks to our experience with the Model X, we know where all the charging stops.

We almost never used a 3rd row seat unless we were gathering people at the airport or some other place where my children’s friends were gathering – which was always a nightmare. It’s hard to imagine that in the COVID era! In any case, I will be happy not to go to airports and not to ride around a bunch of kids. And in that emergency, I just throw a child or two in the trunk for a few miles. I spent half of my childhood like that, and I did well.

Our cute Siberian Husky would just take over and shed fur in the rear with seats downstairs on our weekly trips. The Model Y has a better barrier than our 6-seater Model X.

I also really enjoy driving the Model 3, while driving the Model X feels a little more like being a boat captain. I hope that the Model Y will bridge the gap between my wife’s love of driving and my performance preferences.

Model Y Buying vs. renting?

For one thing, I’m very excited that I won’t have to sell the Model X. Even after it is eventually repaired, I don’t think I would get its value, and I’m sure who got it. would complain about problems with eight. This is now Tesla to deal with.

But at the same time, rents are high, and we had to reduce our trip by taking the Model X to get under the 12,000 miles / year we set aside ourselves. I decided to buy a Model Y so we wouldn’t have to think about it.

Because of the “Autopilot Model X is trying to kill us” problem and Tesla’s history of empty promises about FSD, I decided to give up. However, a few weeks before delivery, Tesla reduced the price of the Model Y by $ 3,000, and the Tesla website said I could add FSD for $ 7,000. With a difference of $ 4,000, I felt it was a reasonable price on a risk / reward basis. However, Tesla came back and charged me $ 8,000 for FSD, so I took it off and decided whether to add FSD later (possibly when the price went up again).

I have a lot of opinions about FSD, which I talk about in the video above. The bottom line is that there is a lot of uncertainty, and even if it’s the year Elon comes along and they get FSD in the machines, that doesn’t guarantee that Google / Waymo won’t get it and won’t charge anything for it.

Model Y parameters

At the time of ordering, the Model Y did not and still does not have a number of options and configurations. I got a white interior, but switched to wheel upgrades due to problems with large Model Y wheels. Not only do you drive better on bad New York roads with smaller wheels, but you also improve efficiency and handling in bad weather. Black wheels look good on basic white paint; However, it was a difficult decision.

I got a watchdog for $ 322 instead of $ 1000/1200 before / after the purchase price. I hope to install this video later this week.
