Candida-fungus-resistant fungus spreads to New York, New Jersey

NEW YORK (WABC) – Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report a fatal, drug-resistant fungus spread around health facilities and a "serious global health threat".

Candida auris covers people with a weakened immune system, infecting blood flow. It is difficult to identify with standard technology. More than 587 cases have been confirmed in the United States, mainly in New York, New Jersey and Chicago, reports the CDC.

Dr. Todd Ellerin, an infectious disease specialist, reports to ABC News that this fungus is resistant to typical cleaning, which is often used in hospitals and medical facilities.

"If we do not change the way of cleaning the premises, then Candida will hang there, which can potentially infect the next person who enters the room," Ellerin said. The CDC says that the early detection of C. auris is essential to maintain its distribution in health facilities. People who have recently spent time in homes for the elderly and have lines and pipes that enter their body (such as respiratory tubes, feeding tubes and central venous catheters) seem to be at greatest risk for C. auris infection. The CDC adds that infections have been detected in patients of all ages, from premature babies to the elderly.

A rare and fatal fungal disease for the first time in the United States in 201

6. He first appeared in Japan in 2009, according to the CDC, and spread to more than 20 countries.
