Pop superstar Billy Elish is already known for experimental clips. The latter, for her new single “My Future”, is no exception.
In the new video, Eilish displaces the dark and gloomy atmosphere of most of her videos to move into the animated world. The video opens with an animated Ailish sitting in the woods during a rainstorm and looking at the moon. Rain is gathering on the pools and on the leaves, and the environment looks distinctly inspired by similar Studio Ghibli films Princess Mononok.
As the song continues, it wanders through the woods, clearing the present dark clouds and rain and causing new life to flow from the earth. The newly formed roots and vines revolve around the Ailee, lifting it into the sky and out into the newly green and beautiful forest. The whole video plays as a crossroads between My neighbor Totoro and Nausikaa Valley of the Wind. It̵7;s beautiful and hopeful, but not without a little melancholy and deep sadness, which makes the films of Ghibli and director Hayao Miyazaki wonderful.
Although this is Ailish’s second animated music video, it is the first to take on a lighter and more useful tone. Her latest animated video was for the song “You Must See Me in the Crown,” where she teamed up with Takeshi Murakami to create a video with an apocalyptic vibe that ends with an animated Billy turning into a giant monster … a distant cry “my future” “vision of spring in the style of Studio-Ghibli.
