TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) – A child under the age of five remains hospitalized in Leon County after being infected with the coronavirus as cases in children continue to rise across the state.
Nearly 8,000 children in Florida tested positive in just eight days.
In the weeks leading up to the opening of schools, the number of new cases continues to rise.
As more children get sick, lawmakers are urging Governor Ron Desantis to rethink the opening of schools and reconsider the nationwide mandate.
“He and the president have failed every child and teacher and caregiver in Florida and put them at risk because of their reckless, reckless efforts to open schools,”; said state spokeswoman Donna Shalala (D).
White House coronavirus co-ordinator Dr. Deborah Birks says researchers are still studying how quickly children under the age of 10 can spread the virus, as many remain at home and away from their peers during the peak months of the pandemic.
