PLACE COMMERCE, Colorado – According to the Colorado Patrol State, a head-on collision killed a Commerce City police officer in a head-on collision early in the evening.
A fatal crash between an unmarked Commerce Ford Explorer police station, a Ford F-350 and a Kia Soul occurred near Highway 2 and Turnerberry Parkway around 6:20 p.m., the CSP said in a press release Friday night. The Ford F-350 was driving on Highway 2 to the south, while the off-road Ford Explorer and Kia Soul were driving on Highway North.
Investigators said the F-350 left on the right side of the road on its shoulder, then returned to the roadway and collided with a marked Explorer and Kia. The F-350 hit the forehead of the Explorer and collided with the driver of the Kia, according to CSP.
A Commerce police officer and a Kia driver were killed in the crash.
The F-350 driver was taken to a University of Colorado hospital with life-threatening injuries. At the moment, the driver̵7;s condition remains unknown.
A procession took place late Friday night as law enforcement officers from across the Denver Subway area gathered to escort the officer’s body to the investigator’s office. You can watch it in the video below.
The person on duty and the Kia driver were not immediately released.
The DSP is actively investigating the case, and the public is being asked to stay away from the area, as the long-term road closure will last for the next few hours.
