The Orange County Health Agency reported 85 new cases of coronavirus on Saturday, October 17, increasing the total to 56,672 cases.
Over the past 30 days, 5273 cases were registered in the county.
Eight new coronavirus deaths were reported on Saturday – a total of 68 deaths among the last four updates – but county health officials said that did not mean that all eight deaths had occurred in the past few days.
Mortality data in the county are collected from death certificates or collected during investigations, and processing them can take weeks, officials say. The last deaths were on October 12, but some report the date back in June, said at a press conference, a district health official, Dr. Clayton Chow.
To date, 1,409 virus-related deaths have been reported in the county.
Of those killed in Orange County, 524 were skilled nurses, 111 were in shelters to help individuals, and four were declared homeless.
The distribution of deaths by age in the district is as follows:
- 85+: 32% (452)
- 75-84: 22% (307)

On Saturday, the county also reported 159 patients in hospitals with coronavirus. On July 14, the peak of hospitalizations in Orange County was 722 patients. The report for Saturday listed 56 patients in the intensive care units.
The county update also reports that 984,271 coronavirus tests have been performed at the local level since testing began, and at least 8,723 tests have been reported in the past 24 hours.
The data, which are published daily, are preliminary and can be changed, officials emphasize. More information may be available after the investigation of individual cases.
