Five people were reportedly injured in a possible gas explosion at a mall in Harrisonburg, Virginia, just a few blocks from the campus of James Madison University.
An early explosion on Saturday could be felt for miles around and caused a fire that eventually caused so much damage, several stores were destroyed.
Among the victims were three students at James Madison University who suffered minor injuries.
The trio was standing near the store when the explosion occurred, part of the ROTC army running group, which took part in the 10-mile race, the finish line of which was a few meters from the site of the explosion.
Although Governor Ralph Northam identified a gas explosion as the source of the incident, local officials were unable to confirm the cause, saying additional investigations were needed.
